The Bear's Den Cottages is part of a large family land preservation effort. We, the owners of Bear's Den Cottages, are part of 200 natural woodland and meadows in the beautiful Appalachian foothills of Southeastern Ohio, Hocking Hills (600 total contiguous acres owned family). We have been preserving the land where our family grew up since the mid-1970's, knowing that with population growth and growth in development, large tracts of green space would be rare. In 1993 our family got into the Lodging business to help pay for additional purchases of land and to provide an opportunity for other people to enjoy such a pristine landscape rich with diverse ecosystems and variety of wildlife.

History of Business:
In addition to the preservation of a large amount of private acreage listed above in the Mission Statement, the owners of Bear's Den Cottages designed both of the units with their degrees/backgrounds in Landscape Architecture/Planning/Architecture. Over 90% of the wood for both structures was timbered and milled by the nearby Amish in the same township. The owners built the cottage (1997), carefully removing only one small tree to gingerly set the cottage in the wooded setting. No new roads were constructed, both sites used existing lanes. The Lodge was built per the owner's timber frame design by a local builder in 2000. The owners lived in the Lodge from 2000 until 2006. The Lodge opened for guest's use in 2006.
Environmental Motivations and Concerns:
What motivates me the most is the desire to live and to see my children live and to see all of the animals, plants, insects and all other living creatures thrive. What a beautiful and bountiful world! But, we must respect the earth and its inhabitants. With our current national and international policies and mistreatment of the earth, there is so little hope for many people of all ages everywhere. Despite the dire circumstances, we need hope the most now. Each individual and each business of every size must seize the day and opportunity to charge into some kind of action NOW to help curtail the negative impacts to the world environmental issues. To me our national leaders and figures need to cry out at the top of their voices the urgency of the situation. Mandatory (not optional) policies should be put in place by governmental bodies for things such as recycling, composting. There should be a moratorium or "slow down" on new building projects by developers taking up our nation's prime farmland and open space. Initiatives to rebuild old neighborhoods and city centers must take the place of new building and sprawl. More funding has got to be put into alternative power such as solar, wind and methane. It needs to be made affordable very very soon to anyone.
